Haripad police register case over alleged murder of medical student in Uzbekistan

The Haripad police in Alappuzha have registered a case over the alleged murder of a 22-year-old medical student from Pilapuzha, near Haripad, in Uzbekistan by a classmate, a native of Malappuram. The case was registered on Wednesday based on a complaint filed by the victim’s parents to the District Police Chief.

Savariya Basanth, a first-year MBBS student at Bukhara State Medical Institute, was allegedly beaten to death with a laptop by Sadarul Anam, 22, a native of Pulamanthole in Malappuram following a heated argument. Mr. Anam has been reportedly arrested by the Uzbek authorities. In their complaint, Savariya’s family has said the woman’s body bore multiple injuries, suggesting severe assault.

Savariya’s maternal uncle, Janeesh, who travelled to Uzbekistan to bring back her body, alleged that the accused had been pressuring her to convert her religion.

Kayamkulam Dy.SP Binukumar T. said the case has been registered based on the statements of the victim’s family members and a report will be submitted to the District Police Chief.

Savariya’s funeral was held at her residence in Pallippad on Thursday following a second post-mortem at Alappuzha Government Medical College Hospital.
