Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee suspended from Lok Sabha for remainder of Monsoon Session

The Lok Sabha on Wednesday (July 22, 2026) suspended Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee for the rest of the Monsoon Session for allegedly using inappropriate language against women members of the Nationalist Citizen Party of India (NCPI), into which 20 rebel Trinamool MPs had merged their faction.

A complaint was filed with the Speaker’s Office by NCPI women MPs, including Mitali Bagh, Shatabdi Roy and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar.

Mr. Banerjee had a heated exchange with the MPs within the Lok Sabha shortly after the House was adjourned for the first time in the morning. However, it was not clear what had led to the altercation.

Some members of the Opposition parties intervened and tried to calm down both sides.

NCPI MPs meet Speaker

Following the incident, Ms. Bagh, Ms. Dastidar and some other NCPI members met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in his chamber, apparently to raise the issue.

When the House assembled at 2 p.m. after the second adjournment, TDP MP Krishna Prasad Tenneti, who was in the Chair, referred to the complaint filed by the NCPI members and said Mr. Banerjee’s remarks had hurt the dignity of the House.

Resolution moved

He then asked Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal to read out a resolution seeking the consent of the House to suspend Mr. Banerjee.

The resolution was passed by a voice vote even as Opposition members continued sloganeering over the alleged NEET paper leak and other issues.

Mr. Banerjee asked to leave

After the resolution was adopted, Mr. Tenneti asked Mr. Banerjee to leave the precincts of the House.

The 20 NCPI Lok Sabha members had broken away from the Trinamool Congress after the party’s defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections and joined the little-known regional outfit.

They expressed their allegiance to the ruling NDA and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and have started sitting separately from the Trinamool MPs in the Lok Sabha.
