CBI re-registers BSP leader Armstrong murder case

A special team of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday (August 15, 2026) visited the spot where the then Bahujan Samaj Party’s Tamil Nadu president K. Armstrong was murdered. 

After re-registering the case following the orders of the Madras High Court, investigators of the Special Task Branch visited the scene of crime in Venugopal Samy Street in Perambur, police sources said. 

Armstrong was hacked to death by a gang near his residence in Chennai on July 5, 2024. 

The case initially investigated and chargesheeted by the Greater Chennai Police was transferred to the central agency by the Madras High Court on September 24, 2025, while passing orders in a petition filed by the BSP leader’s brother K. Immanuel, who sought a CBI probe as the local police had allegedly failed to investigate the case properly. The court also quashed the 7,411-page chargesheet filed by the Greater Chennai Police in the case. 

The Supreme Court stayed the order of the Madras High Court after the Chennai Police Commissioner filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) against the order.

However, the SLP was withdrawn by the State Government recently. Passing orders in the case the Supreme Court said that consequent to the dismissal of the SLP, the order dated September 24, 2025, of the Madras High Court directing quashing of the charge sheet filed by the State Police pursuant to investigation conducted in the case would remain and “the CBI will step in as the investigating agency”.
