Four Indians killed, one injured in attack on ship leaving Ukraine’s Odesa, MEA says

An attack on ​a ship leaving ‌Ukraine’s southern port of Odesa ​on ⁠Sunday (July 19, 2026) killed four Indians and left another at ‌hospital in a critical ‌condition, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Monday (July 20).

The vessel MV Golden Leo — with 17 crew members on board, including five Indian nationals — was hit by Russia with three cruise missiles on Sunday (July 19), Ukraine’s ⁠Navy wrote on the Telegram messaging ‌app.

“India condemns such attacks and reiterates that targeting commercial shipping and endangering innocent ‌civilian crew members, or otherwise ​impeding freedom of navigation and commerce, ⁠is deplorable and ⁠should be avoided,” the MEA said in a statement posted on X.

The Indian mission in Ukraine is ‘closely monitoring’ the situation and is making efforts to extend assistance to the affected, the statement added.

The MEA extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured Indian national a speedy recovery.
