A heavy downpour in several parts of the Malnad region in Karnataka prompted the local administration to declare a holiday for schools and colleges in select taluks.
Primary schools, high schools and anganwadi centres in Koppa, Sringeri and Mudigere taluks of Chikkamagaluru district remained closed on July 7.
In Shivamogga district, schools and anganwadi centres remain closed in Tirthahalli, Sagar and Bhadravati taluks.
Red alert in coastal Karnataka
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for coastal Karnataka for July 7 and 8, warning of extremely heavy rainfall of more than 204.5 mm.
The red alert will remain in force till 8.30 a.m. on July 8. It will thereafter be downgraded to an orange alert, valid till 8.30 a.m. on July 9, with very heavy rainfall of 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm forecast.

Deficit: Vijayapura, Dharwad, Gadag, Belagavi, Koppal, Kalaburagi, Bidar, Hassan, Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Davangere, Haveri, Mysuru, Dakshina Kannada and Shivamogga
Large deficit: Chikkamagaluru, Vijayanagar and Kodagu
Normal: Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru South, Kolar, Mandya, Ballari, Bagalkot, Chitradurga, Chamarajanagar, Yadgir and Raichur
Excess: Tumakuru, Chickballapur and Bengaluru Rural
