In a horrific accident, three students were killed, two on the spot, and three were injured after the sajja (part of roof) of a shopping complex collapsed on them in Deodurg town of Raichur district on Sunday.
Those who died on the spot have been identified as 25-year-old Ravikumar of Kydigera village and 25-year-old Nagaraj of Samudra village in the taluk.
Later, a 21-year-old Arjun, who was shifted to Raichur Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) following the severe injuries he received, died of his injuries at RIMS.
The three injured Umesh, Prabhu and Abhishekh have been admitted to a local hospital where they are receiving treatment.
The victims and the injured students were pursuing degree courses and staying in a government-run hostel in Deodurg.
According to initial reports, the sajja collapsed on them when they all were sticking posters for a short film which they shot.
After hearing about the incident, MLA G. Karemma Naik, officers of the town municipality, the Social Welfare department and personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services rushed to the spot and rescued the injured and shifted them to hospital.
While talking with The Hindu over the phone, Ms. Karemma expressed shock and said that she will meet Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar seeking compensation for the families of the victims.
The Deodurg Police later inspected the spot.
